Charles Darwin: English Naturalist and Father of Evolutionary Theory

Early Life and Education

Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, in Shrewsbury, England. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh before switching to theology at Cambridge.

The Voyage of the Beagle

In 1831, Darwin embarked on a five-year voyage aboard the HMS Beagle as a naturalist. During this expedition, he made extensive observations and collected specimens that would later form the basis of his groundbreaking theory of evolution.

Darwin's most famous work, "On the Origin of Species," was published in 1859. In this book, he proposed that evolution occurs through natural selection, a process in which individuals with traits that make them better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce.

Darwin's theory of evolution revolutionized the study of biology. It provided a scientific explanation for the diversity and unity of life on Earth and helped lay the foundation for modern genetics.

Darwin died on April 19, 1882, at his home in Downe, Kent, England. He is buried in Westminster Abbey, alongside other prominent British scientists and intellectuals.
